History

Since 1986, the United States has minted one-dollar silver coins called "Silver Eagles."

American Eagle Silver Proof Coins are collector versions of the official U.S. bullion coins and are only available in the one-ounce size. American Eagle Silver Proof Coins have a limited mintage and are minted at the West Point facility. The obverse design is Adolph A. Weinman's full-length figure of Liberty in full stride, enveloped in folds of the flag, with her right hand extended and branches of laurel and oak in her left. The reverse design, by United States Mint sculptor/engraver John Mercanti, features the heraldic eagle with shield, and olive branch in the right talon and arrows in the left. The American Eagle Silver Proof Coin contains 99.97% silver. The one-ounce coin has a $1 face value and is 1.598 inches in diameter.

Memo

Uncirculated Silver Eagle coins are minted by the United States government for sale to collectors through coin dealers and precious medal dealers. Unlike Proofs, the coins in uncirculated condition are not minted with any special quality considerations. They are the normal coins intended for circulation or “business strikes” but never enter circulation.
