History
As America's official platinum bullion coin, American Eagle Platinum Bullion Coins give investors an easy way to take advantage of platinum as a precious metal investment. American Eagle Platinum Bullion Coins give American investors an alternative to foreign bullion coins and are part of a complete precious metals portfolio available from the United States Mint.
Authorized by Congress in 1996 and first issued in 1997, they are the first and only official investment-grade platinum coins from the United States Mint. The coins weight, content and .9995 purity are guaranteed by the United States Government.
All American Eagles are legal tender coins, with their face value imprinted in U.S. dollars. Although their face value is largely symbolic, it provides proof of their authenticity as official U.S. coinage. The one-ounce platinum coin displays the highest face value ($100) ever to appear on a U.S. coin.
Coin Design
The American Eagle Platinum Coin's obverse design by U.S. Mint sculptor/engraver John Merchati features a portrait of Lady Liberty - Liberty looks to the future in this modern interpretation of an American icon, the Statue of Liberty. The initial reverse design, prepared by U.S. Mint sculptor/engraver Thomas D. Rogers, Sr., featured America's national symbol of freedom spreading its wings high above our great nation at sunrise in "Eagle Soaring Above America". A series of annually changing reverses was implemented in 1998 and is scheduled to continue through 2002.
Vistas of Liberty™ Series
The Vistas of Liberty™ series was introduced in 1998 and continues through 2002. It is a five-year series of annually changing reverses featuring our national symbol, the bald eagle, in flight above settings representative of various regions of the United States.
