History

Due to large public disapproval, the Treasury became overstocked with half cents around the year 1835. It was resolved that no more circulation pieces would be struck until the stock of remaining half cents was liquidated. During the years 1840 to 1848, only specimen proof half cents were made. Regular coinage resumed was finally resumed in 1849.

Memo

Brilliant or "red" uncirculated pieces are extremely rare in this series.
