Flowing Hair / Wreath Reverse Large Cents (1793)
Information
Weight: 13.48 grams
Diameter: 26-28 mm (approx.)
Edge: "ONE HUNDRED FOR A DOLLAR" (followed by single or double leaf)
Composition: 100% copper
Designer: Adam Eckfeldt
Mint Mark Location: (No mint marks used)
History
The wreath of this design bears a "single bow" wreath, as distinguished from the wreath tied to a double bow on the following type. A three-leaf sprig appears above the date on the obverse, while both sides have borders of small beads.
Introduction of this reverse answered public criticism of the chain design, but the stronger modeling of the face and hair still failed to gain acceptance as representative of Liberty. After three months' production the design was abandoned in favor of the Liberty Cap design.
Memo
Instead of the normal sprig above the date, the rare "strawberry leaf" variety has a spray of trefoil leaves with a small blossom. The trefoils match those on the normal wreath reverse. It is not clear why this variety was created. All known specimens are badly worn
