History

The obverse design on these coins is similar to the one used on the larger denomination coins of this period. All were designed by John Reich.

Memo

This series of large cents does not compare in sharpness and quality to those struck before 1793-1807, nor to those struck after 1816. The copper used for the planchets was softer, having less metallic impurity. Thus, the wearing quality of the series was impaired. For this reason, collectors find greater difficulty in obtaining these dates in prime condition.
