Gibraltar's Precious Metal Coins
The Golden Cherub Angels
The 1998 Cherub Angel coin, first in a magnificent, five-piece series of Royal bullion coins. Engraved by Pobjoy Mint, Europe's oldest private mint, the Cherub Angel coins are destined to become one of the most highly sought after collections. To heighten demand and collectibility, each of the five coins will be graced with a different Cherub Angel design on the reverse.
The delicately rendered image of the first issue captures a detailed portrait of two Cherub Angels resting upon a cloud, with one embracing and kissing the other. In creating this stunning work of art, Pobjoy Mint's designers and engravers interpreted "The First Kiss," a painting by 19th century artist Adolphe-William Bouguereau. One new Cherub Angel design will be released annually.
Angels have long been depicted in artistic forms and religious lore as messengers of God, delivering His word and protecting mankind against evil. Angels today are admired for their decorative characteristics as well as their sacred significance.
"The Cherub Angel coins reflect contemporary interests and sensibilities," says John W. Muery, senior vice president, Precious Metals, MTB Bank. "Serious collectors, hobbyists, and anyone interested in memorable gifts and heirlooms will understand the caliber of their artistry. They will appreciate their symbolic significance. And, upon evaluating the quality of the first issue, they will want to acquire the entire collection."
As legal tender of Gibraltar, a member of the English Commonwealth, Cherub Angel coins are approved by Buckingham Palace. They will each bear an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse, along with the coin's date.
The pure gold (999.9 fine) bullion strike Cherub Angel coins sell at a small premium over their precious metal value. Gold Cherub Angel coins are available in 1, 1/2, 1/5, 1/10, and 1/25 troy ounce versions. The three smaller coins are used primarily by the jewelry industry to create fashionable coin jewelry, including rings, pendants, bracelets, and cuff links. A limited collector, old proof set of all five sizes will be available later this year, as will one-and five-ounce silver proof Cherub Angels.
The gold and silver proof coins display the stunning Cherub Angels in frosted relief on a brilliant mirror background, and are housed in a custom case with a certificate of authenticity. Individual bullion coins are packaged in clear plastic to protect the coin's pristine surface.
