The First Coin Commemorating Itself!
In 1996, the Roosevelt dime design celebrated its 50th Anniversary. To mark this milestone, the West Point branch of the U.S. Mint struck a special 1996 dime for mint sets only. This dime carries the usual design except it bears the "W" mint mark. This is the only commemorative dime ever issued by the United States and the only "W" mint marked coin other than the American Eagle and the White House commemorative coins. No Roosevelt dime set is complete without this one-year only issue!
*In 1965, 1966 and 1967 the Mint issued Special Mint Sets (SMS) as a substitute for proof sets. The coins in these sets are of a higher quality than regular mint sets and are proof-like in appearance.
